JULY'S CLUB OF THE MONTH-Chirbury and Marton YFC!
Chirbury and Marton YFC- Shropshire FYFC's Club of the Month
A bit about the Club
Chairman: Alistair Sheppard Secretary: Lester Futter Treasurer: Zoe Davies President: Maureen Jenkins
Chibury and Marton YFC is a small club of 22 members, situated in the west of Shropshire near the England-Wales border. Next year (2018), the club look forward to celebrating their 60th anniversary! Meetings are held most Wednesdays at The Herbert Arms, Chirbury.
In 2016 Ed Tuffin and Jess and Harriet Bason made it all the way to the National Radio Show Competition, taking home the winning prize. The Club have also had great success in recent fence erecting competitions; in 2016 they represented Shropshire at national level and this year Al and Marcus Sheppard and Josh Bevan qualified to area level-a fantastic achievement for the three young members who are all under 21 years of age.
Charity and Fundraising Work
The club have been working very hard to raise money for some very worthy causes over the last year. In September 2016, the club organised their very own BBC Countryfile walk, raising over £200 for Children in Need, with donations from Christmas carol singing totalling £500 and split between two charities; Wales Air Ambulance and Remembering Rebecca.
In June, Chirbury and Marton completed the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Wales Air Ambulance. This was a 24 challenge, where after weeks of training, 11 members from the club climbed the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland. Members started their challenge at the foot of Ben Nevis, Scotland on Saturday 10th June at 5.30pm, then went on to race up Scafell Pike in Cumbria, and finished at the foot of Snowdon at 4.45pm on Sunday 11th June. With a total of 26 miles walked, a total ascent of 9,800 feet climbed, 462 miles driven and some very challenging weather thrown in for good measure, it is safe to say that the walkers should be extremely proud of such a brilliant achievement.
Well done to all who took part and raised an incredible sum of £5538 in sponsorship for the Wales Air Ambulance: Al & Marcus Sheppard, Lester & Riley Futter, Zoe & Ben Davies, Ed & Ellie Beavan, Jess & Harriet Bason and Fiona Moss, plus club leaders Huw Thomas & Dan Powell.
Chirbury and Marton YFC would like to thank everyone who helped support their challenge, including Oil4Wales, Yorton Stud and SFYFC who kindly helped to cover some of the fuel and T-shirt printing costs. A huge thank you also to the drivers; Tony Sheppard, Stuart Davies, Matt Roberts and Roger and John Lewis.
