West Midlands NFU Trip to Brussels

October

11
  • Tuesday, 11 Oct - Thursday, 13 Oct ,

Below is an extract from the December 2016 Edition of the NFUs British Farmer and Grower Publication:

Members, young farmers and NFU staff went on a two day fact finding visit to the European Commission and Parliament.
Here Matthew Jones, Oswestry NFU member and young farmer, gives some of his thoughts on the first day of lobbying and discussion.

Both Rebecca Green, new Shropshire YFC county chairman, and myself were fortunate enough to be invited on this amazing experience to get an insight in to how the NFU and the British Government work for our farmers at the European Parliament.
I must say I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to politics but found the speakers were informative as they didn’t over complicate matters too much so I could keep track. We had six speakers in all and there was a great mix of different points of views. In particular I found the question and answer session with Mike Dowell, Defra first secretary Agriculture UK, extremely interesting and quite promising. Beck found great encouragement from Richard Ashworth MEP – he’d previously been a dairy farmer in the South East and she was pleased to see he still has good, deep, connection to the industry, with his family still farming and she was pleased that he is in Brussels, representing us at what is proving to be a very uncertain time.

A lot, if not all, of the other EU nations cannot believe we have chosen to leave. That leaves me feeling like it is only because they get a lot more out than they put in. I personally think that we’re in this position and we chose to be here so let’s pull our socks up, stop grovelling and start being the strong and powerful nation we once were. I must say I was amazed by the huge amount of money and resources that have to go in to the European animal. All the linguists, secretaries, security, up-keep, technology and everything else that goes into feeding that huge beast must be absolutely immense – and to top it off for one week each month they move the whole thing to France!

From the Parliament we went straight out for supper and we were privileged to have Anthea McIntyre MEP join us. I personally think it worked very well to have a chat with her in a less formal manner and it was a great insight into the work she does. One thing that came to me was the mix of opinions within our group and how every single member cared a great deal about all of our futures.

I enjoyed the whole trip and learnt a huge amount about how the EU works and the factors which currently affect us. Many thanks go to the NFU for facilitating this trip and to our MEPs for sponsoring the visit.
